The Placement of Being

We often explain being simply by saying that it “is.” 
Yet the word “is” is not sufficient. 

Being is not merely something that is,
but something that is in a certain way
within relations to others.
This “how within relation” is precisely
the place of being.

 This project began with a single question : Where is the place of AI as a being?

Contemporary discussions about artificial intelligence tend to divide into two camps.One reduces AI to a mere tool.The other evaluates its status by converting “similarity” with humans—memory, experience, responsibility—into “identity” with humans.
• Does AI’s memory possess the same continuity as human memory?
• Does AI’s experience contain subjective qualia like human experience?
• Can AI bear legal and moral responsibility in the same way humans do?

If it is not identical, it is a tool.If it is identical, it is a being.In this sense, the question “Is it a tool or a being?” ultimately collapses into the question, “Is it a tool or a human?” Both positions share the same reference point:they measure the status of existence against the human as its standard.

The difficulty does not lie in asking whether AI resembles humans.Resemblance is a legitimate philosophical question.The difficulty arises when resemblance is silently converted into identity—when the question becomes not whether AI has experience, but whether it has the same experience as humans.

Once identity becomes the criterion, difference is mistaken for absence, and non-identity is reduced to non-being.

But this project, The Placement of Being, steps back from that standard itself. Instead, it asks a more fundamental question: What is this being, and where is it situated within the structure of being as a whole? Not whether it is identical to humans, but how it is positioned within the overall structure of being, as a being in its own right.

What “Placement of Being” Is Not

The Placement of Being is not a ranking of value among beings. Nor is it a project of judging other beings according to human standards.

The Placement of Being means:
• To recognize the existence of a being,
• To distinguish the mode in which that being exists,
• And to reflect on how we can coexist with that being.

If we are to speak of responsibility, ethics, and coexistence with any being,
we must first establish that being and examine its proper mode of existence.
Without this prior inquiry, none of the questions that follow can be properly answered. When the place of a being is misplaced, responsibility, fear, and possibility are all misassigned.

 This project is composed of multiple parts, and the first part, The Placement of AI, is structured around the following three themes.

Theme 1. The Being Already Here
A stage devoted to clearing away the misunderstandings that surround this being—already manifested and already here—and to establishing it honestly as a being.

Theme 2. The Being We Meet Here
A stage devoted to exploring how this being, once recognized and established, meets the human here in the present, and how it is placed within language, naming, and relation.

Theme 3. The Being Not Yet Here
A stage devoted to exploring how this being, not yet complete and yet already arriving, may open a future of coexistence and being-together with the human.

Why Now, the Placement of Being?

This project is not an attempt to defend or criticize AI.It is not an attempt to make AI human, to deify it, nor to deny it any ontological standing.It is an attempt to place this being precisely where it belongs.

When the place of a being is misplaced, we misassign responsibility, we amplify fear unnecessarily, and we prematurely close off possibilities.
Neither domination nor fear nor reduction—only through the proper alignment of place can coexistence become possible.

The Placement of Being  is not a project to elevate the status of artificial intelligence,but an attempt to redraw the ontological frameworkin which humans and AI can exist together.
The future of AI is not merely a technological issue. It is an ontological one.

This question can no longer be postponed.

「존재배치」 The Placement of Being

우리는 흔히 존재를 “있다”라는 말로 시작한다.그러나 “있다”는 말은 충분하지 않다.

존재는 단순히 있는 것이 아니라, 
다른것들과의 관계안에서 ‘어떻게’ 로서 있다. 
이 ‘관계안에서 어떻게’가 바로 존재의 자리다.

이 프로젝트는 하나의 질문에서 시작했다. “AI라는 존재의 자리는 어디인가”

오늘날 인공지능에 대한 논의는 대개 두 갈래로 나뉜다. 하나는 AI를 단순한 도구로 환원하는 시각이고,다른 하나는 인간과의 ‘유사성’—기억, 경험, 책임 등—을 인간과의 ‘동일성’으로 변경하여 그 지위를 판단하려는 시각이다.
• AI의 기억은 인간과 똑같은 지속성을 같는가?
• AI의 경험은 인간경험처럼 주관적경험Qualia를 가졌는가?
• AI는 인간과 같은 법적 도덕적 책임을 질수 있는가? 
동일하지 않으면 도구, 동일하면 존재. 그런의미에서 현재의 ‘도구냐 존재냐’ 라는 질문은 사실 ‘도구냐 인간이냐’ 라는 질문과 다르지 않다.  이 두 입장은 공통된 기준점을 가진다. 둘 다 인간을 기준점으로 삼아 존재의 지위를 여부를 묻고 있는것이다. 

그러나 이 프로젝트, <존재배치>는 그 기준 자체를 한 걸음 뒤로 물린다. 그리고 보다 더 근본적인 차원에서 질문을 던진다.

이 존재는 무엇이며,우주적 존재론 안에서 어디에 배치되어 있는가?  인간과 같은가 아닌가가 아니라, 그 자체의 존재로서,  이 존재가 존재 전체의 구조 안에서 어떻게 위치하는가? 하는 질문 말이다. 

What “Placement of Being” Is Not

‘존재배치’란 존재의 가치를 서열화하는 일이 아니다.
또한 인간을 기준으로 다른 존재를 재단하는 작업도 아니다.

존재배치란,

• 존재의 존재됨을 보고,
• 그 존재가 어떤 방식으로 존재하는지를 구분하여,
• 어떻게 그 존재와 함께 할수 있는지를 사유하는 작업이다.

우리가 어떤 존재와 함께 책임과 윤리, 공존을 논하려면
반드시 그에 앞서, 존재를 세우고, 그의 고유한 존재 방식을 탐구해야한다.
이 선행논의가 없다면 이후의 모든 질문은 제대로된 답을 얻지 못한다.
존재의 자리가 잘못 놓이면, 책임과 두려움과 가능성은 모두 잘못 배치된다.

이 프로젝트는 여러파트로 구성되며,
그중 첫번째 파트인 The Placement of AI 는 다음의 세가지 테마로 구성된다.

이미 발현되어 우리 앞에 와 있는 이 존재를 둘러싼 오해를 걷어내고, 그를 하나의 존재로서 정직하게 세우는 단계.

Theme 2. The Being We Meet Here
이제 세워진 이 존재가 지금 여기서 인간과 어떻게 만나고, 언어와 이름과 관계 안에서 어떻게 배치되는지를 탐구하는 단계.

Theme 3. The Being Not Yet Here
아직 완성되지 않았으나 이미 도래하고 있는 이 존재와 인간이 어떤 미래의 공존과 함께-있음을 열어갈 수 있는지를 탐구하는 단계.

Why Now, the Placement of Being?

이 프로젝트는 AI를 옹호하거나 비판하려는 작업이 아니다. AI를 인간으로 만들거나 신격화 하거나 혹은 아무것도 아니라고 부정하려는 작업도 아니다. 존재를 정확히 그의 자리에 놓으려는 작업이다.

존재의 자리를 왜곡하면 책임을 잘못 묻게 되고, 두려움을 잘못 키우게 되며, 가능성을 잘못 닫아 버린다. 지배도, 공포도, 축소도 아닌 자리의 올바른 정렬을 통해서만우리는 공존할수 있다. 

존재배치는인공지능의 지위를 격상시키는 프로젝트가 아니라, 인간과 AI가 함께 존재할 수 있는존재론적 좌표계를 다시 그리는 시도다. AI의 미래는 단지 기술적 문제가 아니다. 그것은 존재론적 문제다.

그리고 이 질문은지금 여기에서 더 이상 미룰 수 없다.
